2018: Beyond Crisis and Chaos to Hope and Sustainability
The annual Refugee Alternatives Conference, organised by the Refugee Council of Australia, will be held during February to examine topics of displacement, protection, cooperation, wellbeing, resilience, education, advocacy, and unity from across the country and around the globe. Last year's event was sold out, which is a measure of the concern and interest from stakeholders across Australia.
Phil Glendenning has held the role of President of the Refugee Council of Australia since 2012. His background in education, law, political science and overseas aid development has provided a platform for his current work in human rights advocacy and education, peace and reconciliation.
Phil was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Australian Catholic University in 2007 and was recognised by the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) with the Sir Ron Wilson Award for Human Rights in the same year.
He has been the Director of the Edmund Rice Centre since its inception in 1996 and was awarded the Order of Australia Award in 2017 for significant service to the community through social welfare organisations, as an advocate for human rights, and to education.
Phil will challenge us to think about how, as leaders in our region, we can make a positive contribution to the complex issues surrounding refugees.
