The 2016 Hargrave Lecture

The annual Hargrave Lecture is the highlight of The Illawarra Connection calendar.

The Hargrave Lecture is traditionally presented by an eminent public figure, usually with links to the Illawarra.

This year we are pleased to welcome Alex Frino back to The Illawarra Connection for the 2016 Hargrave Lecture. Alex will examine developments in key economic indicators for the Illawarra region including business activity, employment and real estate prices and offer some forecasts and perspectives for the future.

Alex has recently returned to the University of Wollongong in the capacity of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy). Locally-born and with a proud migrant heritage, Alex graduated from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1988 and a Master of Commerce (Honours) in 1989.

After winning a scholarship to study at Cambridge in the UK, he completed a Master of Philosophy in Finance, followed by a PhD in Economics at the University of Sydney. His career has taken him from a lectureship at UOW to an appointment in the private financial sector here and in the US and to a professorship at the University of Sydney. Most recently, he was the Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University and oversaw its rise in international business school rankings

Alex was previously the Dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management and Chief Executive of the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre Limited. He was the recipient of a prestigious Fullbright Senior Scholar Award from the US government and has held visiting positions at universities in New Zealand, Italy, USA and the United Kingdom.

Alex is regarded as one of the most prolific finance academics in Australia and internationally, and was the winner of the University of Wollongong Alumni Award for Research and Innovation 2015.

We look forward to welcoming Alex as our keynote speaker for this prestigious lecture.
