Peter Martin - Australia 2055
Peter Martin is economics editor of The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald. A former Treasury official with an honours degree in economics, he covered the economy for AM and PM for two decades and pioneered discussion of the human side of economics on the ABC's Life Matters program with Geraldine Doogue. He understands the hard stuff, but makes it simple. Audiences love him. Peter’s work puts him at the centre of the political action in Parliament House where he rubs shoulders with government ministers and their shadows. He often offends them. He is regularly heard or seen on ABC TV's The Drum, ABC NightLife, ABC Newsradio, ABC Canberra 666, Sydney’s 2UE and Melbourne’s 3AW.
Peter will speak about Australia 2055 - why our children and grandchildren will have to unlearn much of what we have come to believe is true, why they will have little to fear from unemployment, why older Australians will be far from second-class citizens, why superannuation won’t solve the problems we have been told it will, and how ultra-long lifespans will change our views about what it means to be human. We are sleepwalking into a future that is radically different. Peter says we needn’t be frightened, but we should be prepared.
