Our History

Founded in 1993, The Illawarra Connection emerged against the backdrop of challenging economic conditions in the eighties, marked by the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression.

As the late nineties unfolded, Wollongong found itself grappling with the repercussions of this recession, resulting in soaring unemployment rates and a palpable sense of despondency within the community. It was against this backdrop that the idea of The Illawarra Connection took root—a visionary response to uplift the spirit of the town.

Jim Pearce, then Executive Director of the Chamber of Manufactures, came up with the concept of establishing a comprehensive organisation dedicated to regional development. Identifying individuals with innovative thinking, we invited them to join the board. This eclectic group included notable figures such as Dennis Banks (Accountant), Bob Millward (the Steelers Club), Rod Cunich (lawyer),
Martin O’Shannessy (IRIS), Vicki Templeton (Novotel), Peter Newell (MD Illawarra Newspapers/The Mercury), and Professor John Glynn (UOW). Despite initial scepticism, Gerard Sutton, a life member, mused that our vision might not endure - yet, here we are, celebrating 30 years of success.

Early challenges centred around gaining acceptance for our concept. However, within just a few initial dinners, we witnessed a remarkable turnout of 200 to 250 attendees, representing diverse organisations and age groups. The Connection quickly became a fixture in Wollongong's social landscape.

Today, after three decades, the grand ballroom at the Wollongong Novotel Northbeach continues to host full-house dinners, a testament to our enduring success. Those arriving in Wollongong for business purposes are often advised to become members of The Connection as a means to connect with the local business community.

It has solidified its place as Illawarra’s premier networking organisation, a key factor contributing to our ongoing triumph.
